I've been looking around for a re-design effort of our current telecom
switching system over the past 8 months. Finally I settled on CORBA for the
comm infrastructure functionality. When I looked at the free ORBs (didn't
want to get locked in to some vendor's ORB), I looked at MICO, omniORB,
ORBacus and Visibroker. I liked omniORB and figured it would be more stable
for real-time, telecomm systems than MICO. ORBacus also seems like a good
buy if I want to go the commercial route. Since they have a team at ATT
fixing the bugs on this ORB, and they're USING it there, it gives me a
better comfort level.
In terms of unification, I agree with Sai in that the more products there
are (and assuming they're TRYING to interoperate) you'll end up with a
better market. Take Linux for example, which is really a product of Linus's
work, GNU's work (which in itself had several products competing w/ each
other), BSD etc..
