[omniORB] Pointer from a _var?

I will probably kick myself for this, but I can't
work out how access the pointer associated with a
_var type. For instance, if I have an _var reference
to a sequence of strings, how do I determine whether
the pointer is NULL?

With ORBacus I could just compare the value against
NULL, but this doesn't seem to work with omni, so I
guess I have wandered into the world of proprietory
extensions again.
