How about checking your patch level.  This is not frivilous -- our
customer's operational site had a number of odd problems prior to
updating their system patches.  Here are some on my system that may be
relevant:

111177-06      SunOS 5.8: /usr/lib/lwp/libthread.so.1 patch
108528-15      SunOS 5.8: kernel update patch
108435-08      64-Bit Shared library patch for C++
108434-08      32-Bit Shared library patch for C++
