Thanks for your answer. I have checked, really my user has not the privilege to create under /var.
I'll continue asap with the << configure --with-omniNames-logdir=/ast/worknames >>.

You don't say what operating system you are using, nor what error 
message you get when you try to start omniNames.

Perhaps you do not have access to /var/omniNames, so the server cannot 
create its database file. If so, then use the -logdir option to choose 
another location.

Perhaps you cannot load the omniORB libraries in omni-inst/lib. If so 
then you need to set your LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable (or 
whatever it is on your operating system).

If neither of these suggestions helps you, then I suggest you post 
again, with more information about your system, and the error that you 
get. Try running omniNames with the traceLevel turned up.
