ORBit/ORBit2 uses the Unix Domain sockets for local communications.
I haven't heard if they are working on native marshalling (e.g. not doing
the GIOP marshalling) when doing local communications.
Native Marshalling is part of the CORBA High Performance Enablers work at
the OMG.

omniORB 3.0.x uses the TCP loopback, and will not be changed. omniORB
4.0.x has a Unix domain socket transport. Sai-Lai's thoughts about a
"local invocation controller" never materialised.
Cheers,
Duncan.
